Many Democrats did not call for Silver's resignation.  However, they also did not offer unconditional support for the embattled speaker, who turned himself in on Thursday.

Right after the news of his arrest Thursday, there were some calls for Silver to resign.

The Manhattan-based Democrat has held his position since 1994, but was under investigation from the U.S. Attorney's office regarding income generated from a law firm that the state sometimes uses to conduct real estate business, it was reported Thursday.

The NYStateofPolitics.com story said Democrats wanted Silver to make his own decision as to whether he should resign.

The U.S. Attorney's office took up political corruption investigations late last year. Gov. Andrew Cuomo disbanded the Moreland Commission last year, which had been looking into political corruption.

Silver accepted nearly $4 million in bribes and kickbacks dating back at least 15 years, federal authorities charged Thursday.

Silver faces five felony charges involving fraud, extortion and conspiracy. Each charge carries up to 20 years in prison.
